Local Governance and Conflict Resolution in Mogadishu, Somalia

ABSTRACT This study was carried out to determine the correlation between Local governance and conflict resolution in Mogadishu, Somalia. The study was guided by four objectives: To identify the Demographic characteristics of the respondents in terms of, Age, Gender, Level of education, Number of years worked, Marital Status (2) to determine the level of governance of locai administrators. (3) To determine the types of conflict resolution techniques adopted by the local administrators. (4) To establish if there is a significant relationship between the level of governance and the type of conflict resolution techniques used by the administrators in Mogadishu. Survey descriptive correlation had been employed as a research design. The sample size of 109 had been chosen from 150 respondents. The purposive sampling with systematic random sampling was utilized. Three questionnaires on demographic characteristics, local governance and conflict resolution were used. The profile characteristic of the respondents were determined using frequency taste and percentage, mean was used to determine the level of local governance administrators and conflict resolution techniques. The hypothesis was tested with Pearson’s linear correlation co-efficient. The researcher found through the study that the level of governance of administrators and type of conflict resolutions were significantly correlated, and the relationship between them was strong relationship. Therefore, the null hypothesis was rejected. The study has been concluded that the researcher realized the main problem that local administrator face was intra-clan conflict, corruption, inadequate human resource, unequal justice and financial problems. Finally, the researcher recommended that the local administrators require awareness about good governance, capacity building, employment of skilled human resource and accountability to prevent corruption and the misuse of the office. Besides that, the researchers suggested further researches to be done on the: 1) intra-group conflict and accountability, 2) the impact of corruption on local administrations’ governance and 3) equal opportunity of work and local government participation.
