Parenting Styles and Pupils’ Deviant Behaviors in Primary Schools in Lumino Sub- County, Busia District,uganda

ABSTRACT The study investigated the relationship between parenting styles and pupils’ deviant behaviors in primary schools in Lumino, Sub County, Busia District, Uganda. The study was guided with the following objectives; to determine the dominant parenting styles, to find out the extent of deviant behaviors of pupils and to establish the relationship between parenting styles and pupils’ deviant behaviors .Descriptive correlation design was employed and quantitative and qualitative approaches. The sample size of 568 which included teachers, pupils and parents were derived from target population of 1,731. Purposive sampling was used to select the teachers and simple random sampling was used to select parents and pupils. Researcher made questionnaires and interview guide were used to gather data. Content validity index and Cronbach Alpha were used to determine the validity and reliability of the research instruments. Data analyses were done using frequencies, percentage, mean, and Pearson Linear Correlation Coefficient at 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that authoritarian parenting style was the most dominant with a mean of 3.32. The pupils deviant behavior was high with a mean of 0.966. The correlation results indicate that there is a significant relationship between parenting styles and deviant behaviors with r-va~ue of 0.305 and sig. of 0.000. The study concluded that authoritarian parenting style is the most common parenting style practice by parents. Parents need to impose discipline to their children at an early age and teachers must teach good values to their pupils. The parenting styles have an effect on the behavior of their children. The study recommended that parents should not practice one parenting style and must be dedicated, committed and maintain a positive relationship with their children. School administrators and teachers need to set and implement much higher standard of discipline of pupils. The family need to restore the basic principles in education, must educate, discipline and nurture each child in Godly love at home.
