Passessment Of Retirement Preparedness Among Civil Servants In State Health Board, Enugu, Enugu State, Nigeria

ABSTRACT

The study was aimed at assessing the retirement preparedness among civil servants in State

Health Board, Enugu. Four objectives and three hypotheses guided the study. A prospective

descriptive survey design was used and the population of the study was 82 civil servants retiring

between 2016 –2020 and they constituted the subject of the study. Responses were elicited from

respondents using researcher’s developed questionnaire. The instrument was validated using face

and content validity. The reliability coefficient of the instrument was 0.8 using cronbach’s alpha

and the hypothesis was analyzed at P< 0.05 level of significance. The results revealed that most

workers (91.5%) know that their retirement is imminent but majority (88.1%) has little or no

personal savings for post retirement period. Many (64.6%) have enrolled in retirement savings

scheme but did that because it was compulsory (57.3%). Also most civil servants have acquired

skills (73%) and have intention of setting up business after retirement (100%). Hypotheses

testing using chi – square revealed that there was significant relationship between years of

service and retirement preparedness (p=0.010), there was significant relationship between age

and retirement preparedness (p=0.026), there was no significant relation between sex and

retirement preparedness (p=0.479). The study recommended that there should be establishment

of a national public service rehabilitation and vocational center to provide series of training and

counseling programmes for workers about to retire from active service. Also private training

organization should be free to enter the market to avail training opportunities to would-be

retirees.
