Abstract
Social studies is a course of instruction which has pragmatic social relevance. The socio economic, political and technological transformation of society is the primary focus of social studies instruction. The manner in which corruption is spreading in Nigeria society and how social studies education curriculum can provide solution to the problem is the epitome of this paper. The paper therefore seeks to conceptualize social studies, corruption, and further investigated the evolution of corruption in Nigerian society together with factors that promote corruption and it effect in Nigerian society. The paper argue that the rapid spread of corruption in Nigeria is not unconnected with the total absent of right cultural value in the mind of Nigerians right from their childish age towards the country resources and beamed on exploring how social studies education seized a vital role in inculcating the right cultural values to children. The paper further examines some challenges facing social studies educational curriculum in achieving its objectives in Nigerian society. These challenges are mostly in the area of implementation, ineffective use of instructional material, content area among others. The paper also identifies means of re-refocusing social studies curriculum for tackling corruption in Nigerian society. The paper recommend among others that Nigeria must return back to its cultural heritage and social studies as one of the carrier subject most be restricted to address cultural education with all seriousness. And added that students should be exposed to value based education and innovative teaching methods, and seminar, workshops and conference should be organized for social studies teachers on regular bases to discourse issues and problems that could or affect national development (corruption).
