The Bric Cooperation States, International Trade and Peace Building in Africa: An Exploratory Assessment

The emergence of Brazil, Russia, India and China (BRIC nations) to exert socio-economic and -political influence in global trade and investments is becoming more significant to Africa. There are many factors surrounding the interaction between the BRIC and Africa, which may have certain implications on Western interaction with Africa. The arms that Africans fight each other with and/or their governments are sourced internationally, most of which are illegally acquired. The mobilization of rebels in Africa is not necessarily a local affair but at times as a result of sinister motives of outsiders. Africa has Jong kept an eye on her dictators and their unhealthy relationship with the West. In the recent past, the role of the BRIC nations in conflicts and conflict intervention in Africa have been recognized and debated by academics, politicians, policy practitioners and analysts. The contributions of the BRIC nations in peace-building in Africa are also acknowledged. This research is based on the premise that the recent increased willingness and abilities of BRIC nations to invest in Africa has been a concern for stakeholders. The contentions as to whether these nations enhance peace or instigate tension within and among African states are considered.
