The Implication of Climate Change on Transboundary Water Resources: A Case Study of the Kunene River of Southern Africa

Abstract:

Water scarcity is an emerging threat to human security in contemporary time. Cases of natural resource conflicts arc on the increase 4-sin-daily in the Africa region which is home to more than 80 shared fresh water resources. Water insecurity in this respect is a growing international relations discipline arising from the ever evolving international politics .The negative climatic variations being currently experienced in various parts of the World as a result of a general increase of global temperatures are adversely affecting natural resources and most especially fresh water. The United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP) projects that in the year 2025 nearly 50 per cent of Africa's predicted population of 1.45 billion people will face water stress or scarcity, (UNEP, 2007). In light of this reality, this study aims to explore the international relations between States sharing a common international fresh water basin at threat of negative climatic changes. The study focuses on the effects of these climatic changes on the Kunene River, a transboundary river located in the Southern part of Africa while determining the potential of climate change in exacerbating transboundary conflicts.
