ABSTRACT
Home delivery is not a contemporary issue as it predates the history of evolution of human existence. Home delivery is the delivery of a pregnant woman in an environment known to her with equipment which is affordable. Home delivery varies across the socio economic strata; wealth, women’s occupation, husbands’ level of education, and possession of health insurance were associated with the use of health facilities for private and government health facilities for child birth relative to home delivery. However, the safety of home delivery have been a source of concern, the safety of mother and child have been on the spotlight in recent times due to the high incidence of death related to home delivery. Home delivery as against deliveries in hospitals, neonatal and maternal mortality rates are high with the situation especially serious in rural communities. This situation is mostly prevalent in the Northern parts of Nigeria where home delivery is a norm. This study looks at the prevalence and patterns of home delivery in Kudan Local Government Area. The participants were Ninety Seven (97) respondents. The results show that one of the causes of home delivery in Kudan is lack of money; more so, the culture of the people encouraged the practice of home delivery. The study disclosed that home delivery can lead to excessive bleeding, hemorrhage and death of babies. Based on the finding it was recommended that government should make provision for more effective primary health facilities in Kudan Town. This will help to greater measure in the reduction of eradication of home delivery in this area of study.
