The Relationship between Parenting Styles and Conduct Disorder among Children in Dagoretti Girls’ and Kabete Boys’ Rehabilitation Schools.

Abstract:

Adolescence stage is when an individual is in the transitional years from a child to and adult. This stage marks the onset of cognitive, physical and emotional changes therefore a very important time for the child as they try to answer the question who they are and who they want to be in future. Parental love care and supervision is very important to the child because they start question rules and defy them at this stage. The manner in which the parent raise their child determines how they behave towards other people. The purpose of this study was the relationship between percieved parenting styles and conduct disorder among children in Kabete boys’and Dagoretti girls’ rehabilitational schools in Nairobi and Kiambu counties. The researcher applied descriptive research design to undertake the study. The target population were pupils aged 12-18 years of age from Kabete boys’and Dagoretti girls’ rehabilitational schools. From this, a sample size of 160 comprising 75 girls and 85 boys was drawn. Data was collected using a self administered structured questionnaire on parenting styles and the conduct disorder scale was used to collect data on conduct disorder. The data was then analyzed using descriptive statistical techniques. Chi square test of independence to test the relationship between percieved parenting style and conduct disorder. The results reveal that there was a relationship between the percieved parenting styles and conduct disorder. The chi- square statistic is χ2 (df) =68.96P
