Abstract The purpose of this research project was to investigate the role of Microfinance Institutions on entrepreneurship development. The case study was Opportunity Uganda, a Microfinance Institution in Uganda. The first objective of the study was to explore how Microfinance Institutions help people start businesses and create wealth. The findings of the research clearly show that Microfinance Institutions play a very important role in empowering entrepreneurs with loans, training and advisory services. The second objective was to find out whether access to funds improves the saving culture of entrepreneurs. The research found that when entrepreneurs access funds, there is an increase in their income and this eventually leads to having extra income to save. And the last objective was to analyze the challenges faced by Microfinance Institutions as they promoting entrepreneurship. It was found that Microfinance Institutions experience challenges from clients as concerns trustworthiness and meeting their obligations, from the government with unfavorable policies and from management of the institution. The research clearly shows that Microfinance Institutions are important in entrepreneurship development. Without them, entrepreneurs would have difficulty in starting, running them and creating wealth.
