The Trade Unions Role In Improving Employees Working Conditions: A Case Study Of Tuico In Dar Es Salaam

ABSTRACT

This study is based on assessing the roles of TUICO on improving employees working conditions and the effectiveness of TUICO on improving employees working conditions and identifying strategies employed by TUICO on improving employees working conditions. A sample size of 67 respondents was employed and cross sectional survey was employed with a combination of data collection techniques including questionnaires, interviews and SPSS was used for management of data and analysis. The findings reveal that even though there are many obstacles faced by TUICO which in one way or another do not strongly embrace a set of scenarios such as, keep on negotiating for the better salaries and allowances, raising public awareness towards services offered by the trade unions and the importance of joining trade unions among the youth and new employees. The study also unveils that the policy makers and all other stakeholders do poorly participate towards improving employees work conditions for the betterment of the society and the country as the whole and take into account the socio-economic changes which affects employees work conditions within their industries. Nonetheless, TUICO has tried to fulfill a number of roles and responsibilities on improving. With regard to the effectiveness of trade unions on improving employees working conditions, TUICO has been; ensuring desirable standard of living by providing various types of social services for employees, improving working and living conditions, provision of educational, cultural and recreational facilities, cooperating and facilitating technological advance by broadening employees understanding on its underlying issues, just to mention a few. The study recommends that policy makers and all other stakeholders should fully participate towards improving employees working conditions for the betterment of the society and the country as the whole, take into account the socio-economic changes which affect employees work conditions within their industries.
