INTRODUCTION

Have you ever been in a room with an asthma patient during an attack? It can be frightening; the wheezing, coughing, gasping and struggling to breathe. It could be like drowning but, without any water and a lot scarier. According to world statistics, an estimated 300 million people worldwide suffer from asthma, with 250,000 annual deaths attributed to the disease (World Health Organization, 2007).

Asthma which is also called Bronchial Asthma, is an allergic and chronic disease characterized by a hyper-responsiveness of the airways to allergic reactions or a contrition of the airways (Bayode Emmanuel, 2017). Asthma attacks or asthma flare-ups are mostly caused by allergic reactions exposure to allergens such as pet dander, dust mites, pollen or mold. Non-allergic triggers include smoke, pollution or cold air or changes in weather. There is no cure for asthma, but once properly diagnosed and a treatment plan is in place, the appropriate technology can be used to reduce the effects of asthma. An Allergist/Immunologist is the best qualified physician in diagnosing and treating asthma.

The most common symptom of Asthma is wheezing. This is a scratchy or whistling sound when you breathe. Other symptoms include:

    Shortness of breath

    Chest tightness or pain

    Chronic coughing

Trouble sleeping due to coughing or wheezing
