History is replete with bittersweet ironies. RES 401- Selection and Translation from old Testament

It always amazes me when people act as though the bible was written in English and interpret it as though it was written directly to us with our cultural references. One of the first rule of the Bibles interpretation is that before it was God words to us, it was first God’s word to them (the original readers and hearers). And there is a great deal of distance between us and them, starting with the very words used and how they are used to communicate ideas.

RES 313- Literature of the Old Testament

How did the writings of the old testament come to assume it present writing form? What is the nature of these materials these writings are made of? The traditional approach to these questions has been to claim divine origin for all scriptures that is God is directly or ultimately the author. This is claim is called divine inspiration and we shall come back to it towards the end of the course.
