Abstract
This chapter bears the historical background of the study, objectives,
statement of the problem, purpose, significance, hypothesis, scope,
research questions, and limitations to the study of HIV/AIDS.
1.1 Background of the study
Human immune virus is a virus that is transmitted from one person to
another through the exchange of body fluids such as blood, semen,
breast milk and virginal secretions, sexual cont5act is the most common
way to spread HIV/AIDS but it can also be transmitted by sharing
needles when injecting drugs during child birth and breast feeding. As
HIV/AIDS reproduces, it damages the body’s immune system and the
body becomes susceptible to illness on infection.
Human immune virus (HIV) disease was first described in 1981 among
two groups:
In San Francisco and the other in New York City.
The disease was named acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS)
according to DR Dixon Patrick in this book “the truth about AIDS” where
he noted that, “it took sometime to discover that the culprit was a tinny
virus called Human Immune Deficiency Virus (HIV)” it was later known
that some one can be infected with the HIV ten years , fifteen or can
more years before developing the illness called AIDS.
According to United Nations acquired immune deficiency syndrome
(UNAIDS) and world health organization (WHO) 2000, HIV is alleged to
have been transmitted from monkeys to humans most especially the
black and grey monkeys of West Africa. This could have been as a result
1
of kissing sexual intercourse or eating flesh of these monkeys. The same
monkey is traced in east Africa especially on Kenya~Uganda borders.
