Assessing How Democratization Has Influenced the Foreign Policy of Kenya from 1992 to 2019

Kenya became a multiparty state in 1992 after the repealing of Section (A) and thus made positive strides towards democratization. With democracy in Kenya and three regimes after 1992, this research sought to find if democratization has influenced the foreign policy of Kenya from 1992- 2019. This inspired the objectives of this research which are. to investigate the effects of Kenya's democratization on its foreign policy between 1992-2019, to assess the role of parliament on the Kenyan foreign policy between 1992 and 2019 and to examine the role of civil society organizations on the foreign policy between 1992 and 2019. The objectives guided the findings of this research which found that the democratization process has allowed more actors in influencing its foreign policy. The Kenyan parliament plays a crucial in the foreign policy of Kenya-, however, the bulk work is the preserve of the executive arm of the government. Civil society organizations have been influential in Kenya's foreign policy by exerting pressure and keeping the government accountable on issues regarding human rights and protection of refugees but the relationship with the government has always been challenging. While the positive strides have been significant, the executive should give more space for the parliament and civil society organizations in foreign policy making. The research employed case study research design and the data was collected through primary research which incorporated interviews and secondary research using journals, books and the Kenyan government websites.
