Heavy metals are known to be carcinogenic when consumed by humans above certain permissible limits over a long period of time. This study assessed the concentrations of some heavy metal contaminants in River Romi, Kaduna and the consequences of these heavy metals on human health. The Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS) technique was employed to assess the concentration of Cd, Pb, Cu, Zn, Fe, Cr and Ni in surface water samples from River Romi. The results of the finding show that the upper region of the stream has higher concentration than the lower region. The results also reveal that Cd, Pd and Ni have higher concentrations above the WHO and NIS permissible limits, indicating that the River is getting polluted with these chemical elements and pointing to the existence of risks to public health. It was also revealed from the findings that some of the heavy metal contaminants are been released from anthropogenic sources such as industrial effluents, sewage input, and pesticide and fertilizer usage among others. Therefore, it is recommended that Refinery and domestic wastewater that is discharged into the stream be properly treated and monitored. There is also need to be conscious of anthropogenic activities that can result to release of heavy metals the environment in the catchment area.
