ABSTRACT This research study has been on the causes of poor performance m science subjects in secondary schools. The study was conducted m Mukungwe Sub County Masaka district but raises a theory and recommendation that could apply in others areas in Uganda. The research had specific objectives as to: - Analyze the impact of up grading courses on the teaching and motivation of science teachers. Weigh the relative performance in sciences to other academic subjects in secondary schools in relation to upgrading courses. Find out whether the upgrading course and the teaching of sciences have been in line with the government educational policies and know the factor limiting up grading courses and relative performance of sciences in secondary schools. The research study utilized both quantitative and quantitative methods of study and discipline research design was highly used in presentation and analysis of data and school management committees of four (4) selected secondary schools in Mukungwe Sub County Masaka district. It was found out that: Most teachers of sciences were not properly qualified and had a little experience in teaching, Schools in this area rarely carry out career days to guide teaching, Much of the time allocated on time table is other subjects unlike sciences which were allocated a few hours believing that the learners have learnt enough sciences since primary. This is especially so in senior three and four and Students commonly pass art subjects than science subjects. It was therefore V thought as being important if the following could be considered: encouraging learners to do both theory and practical work, training of teachers in necessary skills needed to effect science teaching, more time allocation to science subjects and motivating teachers most especially those involved in the teaching of science subjects.
