Effect of Green Leaf Manuring on Soil Physicochemical and Soil Biological Parameters

ABSTRACT

Present study was conducted to evaluate the effect of green leaf manuring on soil physicochemical and biological parameters. Three out of total four soil samples were treated with Mangifera indica, Gmelina arborea and Dialium guineense leaf manures one for each respectively prior to the cultivation of Telfairia occidentalis plant on each of the soil samples including the untreated soil sample (control). Physicochemical and biological parameters of the soil samples, plant growth characteristics, mineral, proximate and phytochemical compositions of both the leaves of the cultivated plant and the leaves used as manure were evaluated and compared.  Data collected were subjected to analysis of variance. Significant increase (p<0.05) in organic carbon, organic matter, nitrogen, phoshorus, sodium, exchangeable acidity, exchangeable aluminium, exchangeable hydrogen, moisture content and sand levels were observed in the treated soil samples. Higher growth rates were recorded amongst plants cultivated on the treated soils. There were significant (p<0.05) increase in total microbial counts and soil dehydrogenase activities amongst the treated soil samples. Leaves harvested from the plants grown on the treated soils showed higher mineral, higher proximate and lower phytochemical compositions. There were no necessarily highly correlations in  values of mineral contents, phytochemical and proximate compositions, when the harvested leaves and that of the manure leaves were compared. In conclusion, green leaf manuring generally showed significant effect on levels of soil physicochemical and biological parameters which improved the overall soil fertility with Gmelina arborea leaf manuring showing the greatest effect.
