THE EFFECTS OF TRUANCY ON THE EDUCATIONAL ACHIEVEMENT OF STUDENTS OF NSEIN SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

Truancy is one of the numerous problems challenging the academic performance of many students and Nsein Senior High School Students are no exception. The purpose of this study is therefore to find out why students skip school and the impact it has on their educational achievements.

The ers employed purposive sampling and simple random techniques in selecting their respondents. Out of the accessible population, the ers selected one hundred (100) respondents which included sixty (60) students, thirty (30) teachers and ten (10) parents. The ers employed purposive sampling and simple random techniques in selecting their respondents. The data collected was analyzed by using frequency tables and percentages.

The findings showed that driving students home for their school fees and negative events in the student’s home life are the main causes of truancy among students. This was followed by corporal punishment by teachers and too much manual labour in the school. On the other hand, teachers’ method of teaching was not identified as one of the main causes of truancy among students. Poor academic performances at the end of the term or year examinations, unqualified graduates and school dropouts were identified as the major effects of truancy. Incentive programs such as prizes, awards, and extra privileges; good instructional design among others were some of solutions identified to help reduce truancy among the students. The study therefore calls for the need for the school, the home and the community to collaborate in their effort of reducing the truancy problem among students of Nsein Senior High School.
