Examining the Effects of Institutional Conflict on Staff Performance in Collins Senior High Schoo Asante Akyem Agogo in the Ashanti Region of Ghana

There appears to be conflict in every human society.  It is difficult to accept conflict as natural and unavoidable condition.  Conflicts naturally occur in teams and organizations. Conflict is unavoidable in all cultures, but every culture has its own way to manage it. In an institution with any kind of disagreement or conflict among individuals at work, it poses risk for the individuals, both the employer and the institution as it affects employee’s productivity at work. The research gathered data from both primary and secondary sources and used the case study approach. The key instruments used for the data collection were interview guides and focus group discussion guide. Fifty – three (53) participants took part in this research. There was a focused group discussion with five (5) heads of department from Collins Senior HighSchool. The study revealed poor communication, poor resource allocation, ineffective institutional system, unpredictable policies, tribalism, incompatible goals, scarce resource, differences in supervisory styles between departments, perceived or actual differences in treatment between departments or groups of employees, lack of benefits, varying views on accountability, cutting of position of employees, poor human relations between management and workers, disagreementbetween employees and employers, clashing of one’s role, selfishness among employers and employees, politics and difference in educational background, personal experiences, religion and gender, and distribution of duties are the causes of conflict at Collins Senior High School. It is recommended that at staff meetings, the staffs complain and suggestions should be discussed and immediate explanation or feedback given to the concerned staffs. Also, management must be fair with all staff members this will actually encourage we-feeling among the staff of Collins Senior High School.
