ASSESSMENT OF THE QUALITY OF MARKETED CERTIFIED VEGETABLE SEEDS IN ORIGINAL PACKAGE AND THOSE REPACKAGED AT RETAILERS’ END IN THE ASHANTI REGION OF GHANA

ABSTRACT The use of quality seed is a prerequisite for high vegetable productivity. The Ghana Seed Inspection Division conducts seed quality assessment to ensure that seeds meet minimum quality standards before they are certified to be sold to farmers. Poor seed storage practices and repackaging of certified seeds at retailers’ end could adversely affect seed quality before farmers purchase these for planting. Post-certification surveillance was undertaken to assess the quality of certified...

EFFECT OF PLANTING DATE AND VARIETY OF COWPEA [Vigna unguiculata (L.)Walp.] ON GREEN POD PRODUCTION

ABSTRACT  A study was carried out in 2012 in a Sudan savanna ecology in Ghana aimed at identifying the optimal planting dates and suitable cowpea varieties for green pod production. Six planting dates were considered starting from the onset of the rainy season (20th June, 30th June, 12th July, 25th July, 2nd August and 12th August), and four improved cowpea varieties released by Savanna Agricultural Research Institute (SARI) of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) a...

ESTIMATION OF QUANTITATIVE LOSSES OF RICE (ORYZAE SATIVA L.) DURING HARVESTING, THRESHING AND CLEANING IN THE UPPER EAST REGION: A CASE STUDY AT TONO IRRIGATION PROJECT

ABSTRACT Loss assessment helps to identify constraints affecting the production and therefore the productivity of food crops. Information on loss assessment will thus assist in possible interventions needed to improve productivity. Quantitative losses associated with the production of rice (var. Jasmine 85) in the Kassena Nankana West District of the Upper East Region, one of the major rice producing areas in Ghana has not been adequately documented. A semi structured questionnaire was used t...

IDENTIFICATION OF NEMATODES AND MORPHOLOGICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF MELOIDOGYNE INCOGNITA ASSOCIATED WITH SOLANUM LYCOPERSICUM L. IN THE ASHANTI, BRONG AHAFO AND UPPER EAST REGIONS OF GHANA

ABSTRACT Production of tomato in Ghana is threatened by plant parasitic nematodes. Identification of the types,  distribution  and  population  densities  of  these  parasites  is  indispensable  for the design  and implementation of a proper nematode management practice.  A study was conducted to: assess farmers' knowledge and perception on plant parasitic nematode occurrence and management on their farms in  nine communities of Ashanti, Brong Ahafo and Upper East Regions ...

ABSTRACT The citrus gummosis disease is a major problem facing the Agriculture Research Station of the University of Ghana at Kade. The disease is the cause of death of citrus plants on the station, hence this work initiated to investigate the cause(s), possible contributing factors and its control on the station. A field survey conducted from January to June 1996 gave 36.2 -79.9% incidence (Avg. 62.6%) on six orchards of the station and an average severity index of 1.2 on a 0-5 scale....

Effect of Plant Extracts on Some Fungal Pathogens Associated with Groundnut Seeds Grown in Southeastern Nigeria

ABSTRACT Groundnut samples collected from commercial markets in South–Eastern Nigerian were examined for seed borne fungi organisms and their level of losses were quantified. Results obtained showed that only about 29% of groundnut seeds were without damage. This high rate of damage is a major factor in low viability of groundnut seeds in South – Eastern Nigeria. From the survey of groundnut seed cultivars, two cultivars: Spanish 205 (nwaerente) and Samnut 21 (Ngwongworo) were observe...
