Groundwater Potential Of Akpugo In Nkanu Area Enugu, Southeastern Nigeria

Abstract: Groundwater potential at Akpugo and environs in Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State has been undertaken in order to determine the groundwater status in the area. It lies on latitudes 060 2010011N to 0602510011N and longitudes 0070 3410011 to 00703910011E with an areal extent of about 86.49km2, over three geological units. A total of Twenty-five (25) vertical electrical sounding (VES) were acquired to determine the groundwater potential of the study area. Contour variation maps of Apparent Resistivity ranges from 0-28,0000 units, Thickness ranges from 60-180m, Transverse resistivity ranges from 0-1900m, Longitudinal Conductance ranges from -1-11m, The Anisotropy 0.8-5.8 units, Aquifer transmissivity ranges from 2067.93m2/day -4663.12m2/day were constructed. The increase of the Computed parameters and indication from the maps show that at the NE and SW of the study area is the target of groundwater potential. The information gathered from the results of Vertical Electrical Sounding (VES) shows that the study area has medium groundwater potential. The results revealed that the average depth of borehole that should be drilled at the study area will be about 80- 100m.
