INFLUENCE OF SELECTIVE HIRING ON THE STAFF RETENTION OF MANUFACTURING FIRMS IN ENUGU STATE

Abstract
The study evaluated the Influence of Selective Hiring on the Staff Retention of Manufacturing Firms
in Enugu State. The specific objectives of the study are to; examine the influence of special skill on
reduced turnover of manufacturing Firms in Enugu State and evaluate the influence of knowledge on
the opportunities to grow of manufacturing Firms in Enugu State. The research population for the
study was made up of 455 employees comprising management/senior staff and junior staff of the three
selected Aluminum companies in Enugu state, Nigeria. The study used the survey approach. The
primary sources were personal interview and the administration of questionnaire. A stratified sampling
method was adopted. The whole population was used due to the small number. 328 staff returned the
questionnaire and accurately filled. That gave 72 percent response rate. The validity of the instrument
was tested using content analysis and the result was good. The reliability was tested using the Pearson
correlation coefficient (r). It gave a reliability co-efficient of 0.72 which was also good. Data was
presented and analyzed by mean score (3.0 and above agreed while below 3.0 disagreed) and Z – test
was used to test the hypotheses with aid of Special Package for Statistical Software (SPSS). The
findings indicated that Special skill had positive influence on reduced turnover of manufacturing Firms
in Enugu State Z (95, n = 328) = 7.445 < 8.958, p > 0.05. Knowledge had positive influence on the
opportunities to grow of manufacturing Firms in Enugu State Z (95, n = 328) = 6.460 < 7.730, p >
0.05. The study concluded that Special skill and Knowledge had positive influence on the reduced
turnover and the opportunities to grow of manufacturing Firms in Enugu State. The study
recommended among others that organisations should endeavour to train competent employees within
the organisation and prepare them for higher posting to work in the organisation. It will encourage the
employee to stay for a long period.
