Investigate The Perceptions Of Teachers And Students On The Implementation Of Field Trip In Enhancing Learner-Centered Approach In Tanzanian Secondary Schools A Case Study Of Mbeya City

ABSTRACT

The study was to investigate the perceptions of teachers and students on the implementation of the field trips in enhancing the learner-centered approach in Tanzanian secondary schools. Three objectives guided the study: To examine the perceptions of educational stakeholders such as teachers, students, and educational officers; to identify strategies used by teachers on the implementation of field trip in enhancing learner-centered approach; and to find out challenges faced by teachers during the implementation of field trips in enhancing the learner-centered approach. The study employed a qualitative approach using the case study research design. The study involved a sample of 39 participants where 36 participants from five schools, 2 quality school assurer and 1 city educational officer. The participants were selected through purposive sampling techniques. Data were collected through a semistructured interview, focus group discussion, non-participant observation methods, and documentary review. In this study, data were analyzed by using thematic analysis. The findings revealed the worthwhile of field trip in schools that can have a profound impact on both students and teachers as they can be exposed to new environments. This may influence or enhance the learner-centered approach in secondary school to increase interest, motivation, creativity in learning and increased performance. The findings also disclosed that teachers from the public schools were not conducting field trips due to lack of funds; the introduction of new education circular 2015 of fee-free education may affect the practice of field trips. Moreover, it was revealed that teachers view field trips as the best strategy in teaching and learning, however, close supervision of curriculum under school quality assurer is advised. Also, an increase of funds for the schools was advised. It is recommended that it is worthwhile to ensure that all key educational stakeholders play their roles especially teachers, without which effective teaching methods will always remain on papers. Teaching using field trips should be achieved in its implementation. The study concludes that the implementation of field trips in secondary schools is apparent and important, but there should be a serious commitment from teachers hence improvements for better results and quality of education in Tanzania
