Investigating the Role of Non-State Actors in Actualizing Sustainable Development Goal 4: Assessing the Transition from Primary to Secondary Education in Kenya - A Case Study of Bridge Intern

Abstract:

The study explored in-depth into the role that non-state actors play alongside the government of Kenya in actualizing Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Four which is to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning for all. Kenya being a member state of the United Nations espoused the global Sustainable Development Goals and accordingly the mandate to actualize them. Specifically, the study looked into the transition of learners from primary to secondary schools as a means of ensuring that all learners attain inclusive and equitable quality education. The main questions that the study aimed at answering included: What are the gaps and remedies in the transition from primary to secondary education in Kenya? What is the role of non-state actors in actualizing education outcomes based on SDG Four in Kenya? What is the contribution of Bridge International and Kenya Education Fund in enabling the transition from primary to secondary schools in Kenya? The methodology used the descriptive survey research design to address the information from Bridge International, Kenya Education Fund, head teachers, teachers, parents, and the sponsored learners using both primary and secondary data. The study counteracted the assumptions that the government has the sole responsibility of providing quality education to its people. Non-state actors have played a significant role in education and the study covered how Bridge International and Kenya Education Fund, as its case studies, have offered assistance on actualizing the SDG Four of quality education specifically with the transition rates of learners from primary to secondary schools.
