Introduction: The underdeveloped regions of the world seem to be mostly affected by nutritional problems associated with food insecurity. Within these underdeveloped countries, Africa’s share of the problems is great. Inadequate food situation has remained a great problem in Nigeria. Nutritional deficiencies such as are associated with protein and energy are recognized to have the potential adverse effects on learning and intelligence, thus, appropriate nutrition interventions are dependent on the comprehensive assessment of nutritional status.

Aim of the study: This study was done to use The Body Mass Index (BMI), in estimation of nutritional status and correlation with intelligent quotient of children in Aba north towards policy advocacy at the LGA level.

Materials and Method: A cross sectional study carried out on 328 families (a school child within 5 to 8 years of age, mother and father), using a structured questionnaire to obtain data on age, school, sex. The Body Mass Index (BMI), was used to estimate nutritional status of school children. A 10minutes IQ test was conducted for the school children and their biological parents. Chi Square was done to determine association, correlation was done to determine any relationship P<0.05 was regarded as significant.

Result: Among the 164 pupils of government schools and 164 pupils of private owned schools, ages 5, 6, 7 and 8 of private schools show values of more nourished than their government counterpart in BMI: 2.2; 1. 79, 1.29, 0.75. Nutritionally deficient children presented lower IQ grade which did not show significant association with that of their parents (at P-Value, 0.05).

Conclusion: school children of government owned schools fall within the lower border of the nutritional reference point and are hence less nourished than their private counterpart.  Malnourished school children showed lower Intelligent Quotient Grade than the well-nourished.
