Perception of Undergraduate Students on Constructivism Teaching and Learning in the Department of Library and Information Science, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria

This study investigated the perception of undergraduate students in the department of Library and Information Science, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, on constructivism, which is aimed at producing graduates with creativity and higher-level thinking order. Using Social Development Theory as a theoretical framework, qualitative analysis method was used to interview 10 students in the department of Library and Information Science who shared their various experiences on constructivism teaching philosophy. The researcher used an analytic inductive process to identify 243 narratives explaining constructivism teaching philosophy. The narratives were organized into 29 recurring topics and further collapsed into seven emergent categories to explain constructivism. Findings indicated that students of library and information science, in a constructivism class: 1) convey an intrinsic motivation for learning (2) are always tasked with reading literatures in preparation for class (3) discovered that sitting arrangement supported their learning (4) experience stage fright, introversion and other psychological limitations to participate and (5) are conscious of the repercussions involved in failing to attend a class. Findings suggests that for a sound level of expertise to be inculcated among students, grave importance and attention should be placed on students’ participation in a constructivism class in the department of library and Information Science.
