Salary And Employees' Motivation To Work A Case Of Wakiso District Local Government

This study set out to investigate the relationship between salary and employees motivation in Wakiso District Local Government. The study was carried out in Wakiso District Local Government headquarters and selected sub-county headquarters in the District. The study was carried out along a number of objectives which were; to examination the effects of salary on employees attitude to work, to establish the relationship between salary and retention of employees in local Government and to establish the problems of salary in motivating employees.

The study was carried out using a self-administered questionnaire to the staff and an interview guide to the top management. The data collected was entered in the Computer and analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Scientists (SPSS). The hypothesis of the study was analyzed using the Pearson product moment correlation based on certain conditions that described the data.

The study came up with a number of conclusions. For example, it was concluded that; there is a significant relationship between salary and employees retention, there are a number of problems that affect the use of salary to motivate employees and that salary has an effect on the employees' attitude to work.

From the study, a number of recommendations were made which include the need to improve the employees' salary in order to improve their retention. The management of local government should endeavor to take care of fairness in salary and improve the methods of determining pay to match with the cost of living over time and developing a positive employees' attitude towards the salary structure.
