School Facilities And Academic Performance of Students In Geography Subject Of Msumarini Secondary School In Kilifi District, Kenya

ABSTRACT

Objectives: This study study investigated the school facilities and academic performance of students in geography subject of Msumarini Secondary School in Kalifi District, Kenya. Specifically, these data

were gathered: profile of students as to age, gender, class; level of school facilities in terms of methods of teaching, physical resources, teaching aids/materials, classroom environment; level of academic

performance; significant relationship between level of school facilities and level of academic performance; and significant difference in the level of academic performance between male and female students.

Design: This study employed the descriptive survey method of investigation.

Environment: This study was conducted at Msumarini Secondary School in Kikamabala Division in Kilifi District of coast Province of Kenya. It's a mixed day school and they cater both boys and girls.

Respondents: This study involved 82 form two (F2) students wherein 41 from west and 41 from east, both boys and girls.

Instruments: This study utilized a researcher devised instruments which were the following: the first tool was a questionnaire to be answered by students as to age, gender, class and level of school facilities in terms of methods of teaching, physical resources, teaching

aids/materials, classroom environment. The responses in the questionnaire were quantified in the following: SA (Strongly Agree=4); A (Agree=3); D (Disagree=2); SD (Strongly Disagree=l); the second researcher devised instrument was a record sheet consisting of the academic performance of students in geography subject.

Data Collection Procedures: The frequency and percentage were used to determine the profile of students and level of academic performance. The weighted mean was used to determine the level of school facilities in terms of methods of teaching, physical resources,

teaching aids/materials, classroom environment. The obtained data were interpreted in the following guide: 3.26 - 4.00 very satisfactory, 2.51 - 3.25 satisfactory, 1.76 - 2.50 fair, and 1.00 - 1.75 poor. The Pearson product moment correlation coefficient was used to measure

the relationship between level of school facilities and level of academic performance and the paired or related t-test was used to test for significant difference in the level of academic performance between male and female students.

Findings: This study revealed the following: the mean age of the students was 18.27; the level of school facilities mean rating was 2.28 which was categorized as fair; the level of academic performance was

poor (37.57); between level of school facilities and level of academic performance; It was evident that the level of school facilities was significantly related to the level of academic performance; there was no significant difference in the level of academic performance between male and female students. 


Conclusion: Based on the findings, it was concluded that the school facilities and academic performance were correlated.
