School Facilities, Class Size and Academic Achievement of Secondary School Students in English Language in Uyo Senatorial District, Akwa Ibom State.

The study investigated the difference in the academic achievement of secondary school students based on school facilities and class size in English Language in Uyo Senatorial District, Akwa Ibom State. Two research questions were raised and two hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The ex-post facto survey design was used in carrying out this study. The population of the study comprised 21,726 Senior Secondary Two (SS2) students distributed into 86 public secondary schools in Uyo Senatorial District of Akwa Ibom State. Multi-stage sampling technique was used to select 27 schools (31%) and 452 students (10%). Two researcher-developed instruments, “School Facilities and Class Size Questionnaire (SFCSQ)” and “Student Achievement Test in English Language (SATEL)” were used to gather data. The reliability coefficient of the instruments determined using the Cronbach Alpha Analysis were .910 for SFCSQ and .941 for the SATEL. Independent t-test analysis, and one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) were used in analyzing the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The findings of this study revealed that there is significant difference in academic achievement of students in English Language based on school facilities and class size. Students in schools where the variables were adequate performed better than those that variables were inadequate. It was concluded that it is important for school facilities and class size to be adequate to enhance better academic achievement among students. Based on the findings of this study, it is recommended that, there should be effective collaboration between the school and other stakeholders to proactively and significantly contribute towards the development of solid learning infrastructure
