Social-Demographic Characteristics Influence on Community Based Approach in Conflict Management: Case of Post-Election Violence Affected Regions in Kenya

Abstract:

Community defines networks of people who connect to each other in different perspectives. As a result of interdependence which is the natural connection between two or more groups, the community is always in the process of peace building. This is done through improved relationships, and clear definitions and respect for others social spaces which creates room for reconciliation and conflict transformation. Community – based approach strategy has become among the most common and also widely accepted method of providing assistance to conflict prone areas. Conflicts mainly arise from individuals or groups with different values, needs and interests; and competition over limited resources. Community conflict management requires that the community members are aware of community conflict early warning, prevention, and response initiatives. This research sought to assess the influence of social demographic characteristics on community-based conflict management especially now that Kenyans are preparing for elections in 2017. This study used cross-sectional descriptive survey design incorporating both qualitative and quantitative research methods in the case study. Findings revealed that the community had minimal knowledge on community approach in conflict management. The research therefore recommended that all community members should be engaged in community peace building and conflict management initiatives since each category of community members have unique roles.
