Teachers’ Welfare and Performance in Secondary Schools: A Case Study of Nyando District, Kisumu County- Kenya

ABSTRACT In any institution in this world, there are the employers and employees, their welfare matters a lot to their performance. Therefore, the teachers as employees also deserve quality welfare leading to this research study on the teachers’ welfare and performance in secondary schools in Nyando District in Kisumu County. The emphasis of this research study was based on the following objectives; establish the impact of teachers’ remuneration on their performance in school, fringe benefits and how it has impacted on the teachers’ performance and to establish entitlement of the teachers’ incentives on their performance. The study was an exploratory survey drawn from the public secondary schools in Nyando District. Questionnaires and guided interview was used as the main instruments of the research. Using the random sampling technique, 6 public secondary schools in Nyando District were selected. This research study involved 30 respondents who were the teachers and the school administrators. Data collected from the teachers’ responses to the questionnaires were analyzed by descriptive (frequency tables) and report of the interview was reported. The study revealed that the teachers’ are not satisfied with their remuneration, the fringe benefits and incentives are inadequate. This showed the relationship between the teachers’ welfare and their performance in secondary schools. From the findings of the study it was recommendable to the government strategize on salary increment, allocate the teachers with the allowances needed like accommodation allowance, overload, health, transport, social security, job advancement and stability. The government also needs to recognize the hardworking teachers and seminars and trainings should be organized too. By doing all these, the teachers’ welfare will remain improved and teaching profession will be a better place to be.
