The Role of Non-Governmental Organizations in Conflict Resolution: The Case of Pokot and Karamojong Cross Border Conflict

Abstract:

Kenya and Uganda, are countries bordering each other located in East Africa and share a lot in common. The most distressing similarity is that the two countries have both experienced conflict for decades which involves the Karamojong community living in the North East parts of Uganda and the Pokot living in North West parts of Kenya, they are pastoralists in nature living together for decades. Non-governmental Organizations over the years along the border region have ensured that peace is realized through getting involved on different activities with the locals, examples are World vision, ACTED, Pact Kenya, International Organization of Migration, World food program, Harvesters International, have ensured that there is enough water supply through drilling of boreholes, providing food staff to the hunger affected homesteads in the villages, holding peace meeting with both Pokot and the Karamojong communities, peace is eventually realized since both communities view Non-governmental organization in the region as neutral and non-partisan . This trust intern has smoothened and quicken the mediatory role championed by the Non-governmental organizations. Even though conflict between Pokot and Karomojong communities has existed in the region for decades the current trend, direction and scope is worrying and therefore needs to be addressed since many people have lost their lives, livestock looted, many left in abject poverty with little option for survival, this conflict has over time increased the possibility of further instability and clashes between the two rival communities. The negative impact of conflict has greatly contributed to the need for resolving conflicts cross the border region. This study seeks to establish effect of Non-governmental organizations in conflict resolution, with special focus on Karamojong and Pokot cross border conflict
