ABSTRACT
The contamination of agricultural soil by quarrying activities has environmental and health implications especially the effect on bioaccumulation. Comparative study of contamination and distribution of heavy metals in three different quarry sites of Eziama in Umunnochi, Abia State, Nigeria was carried out in order to determine the concentration of heavy metals in quarry soil and their bioaccumulation in cassava tuber (Manihot esculentum). Soil samples were collected with aid of a hand dug soil auger at depths of 0 – 30cm. Cassava tubers were carefully uprooted with aid of spade from the same soil sampling site. The samples were collected in well labelled polythene bags. The samples were immediately transported to the laboratory for standard physicochemical analysis. The results obtained were subjected to statistical analysis at P < 0.05 at 95% confidence level. Results showed that all the physicochemical properties of the soil samples significantly varied at p=0.00 from the control site. Soil pH raged from 7.30±0.01-9.53±0.04, Electrical conductivity: 80.00±5.77– 326.67±3.33µscm-1 ; Total Organic Carbon: 43.33±1.32 -75.31±0.68; Total Nitrogen: 17.73±0.46- 42.33±0.88; Nickel :0.06±0.04 -2.21±0.02mg/kg: Mn: 0.72±0.01 -35.25±0.18 mg/kg; Co :0.10±0.03 - 1.48±0.04 mg/kg; Pb: 0.14±0.01–0.43±0.01 mg/kg; Cd: 0.02±0.01–0.61±0.02 mg/kg; Cr: 0.31±0.14–1.91± 0.19 mg/kg; Fe: 353.58±0.00- 436.36±0.00 mg/kg and Al 4.12±1.15–14.65±0.25 mg/kg.
