Estimation Of Carbon Stocks In Acacia-Commiphora Woodlands In Kiteto District, Tanzania

ABSTRACT Carbon stocks of Acacia-Commiphora woodlands was estimated using site specific biomass allometric models developed in Kimana Village, Kiteto District, Tanzania. Fifty sample trees covering a range of diameter at breast height (DBH) from 5.9 cm to 79.2 cm from 12 different tree species were destructively sampled to develop biomass and volume models. The sample trees included three dominant species namely Commiphora africana, Balanites aegyptiaca, and Acacia tortilis. Candidate non-lin...

Economic Contribution Of Private Woodlots To The Economy Of Mufindi District – Tanzania

ABSTRACT The main objective of this study was to asses and quantify the contribution of private woodlots to the economy of Mufindi district in the Southern Highlands of Tanzania in year 2008. The specific objectives were, to examine and quantify the levels of woodlot ownership coupled with capital asset acquisition, to asses and quantify the rates of tree planting in relation to the utilization rate by value added activities, to asses and quantify the contribution of private woodlots to the c...

Structure And Biomass Accumulation Of Natural Mangrove Forest At Gazi Bay, Kenya

ABSTRACT Mangroves occupy only 0.4% of forested areas globally but are among the most productive ecosystems on earth. They account for about 11% of the total input of terrestrial carbon into the oceans. The above ground carbon stock in mangroves in some parts of the World has been estimated to be as high as 8 kg C m-2; with a similar amount reported for below ground components. Although a lot of research has been done on estimates of mangrove biomass in Kenya, there is no information on bioma...

The natural decay resistance of 30 Ghanaian wood species, the decay capacity of four wood...

Population distribution and threats to sustainable management of selected non-timber forest products in tropical lowland rainforests of south western Nigeria

Abstract: Uncontrolled harvesting of non-timber forest products (NTFPs) poses a serious risk of extermination to several of these species in Nigeria. Yet, there is a paucity of information on the distribution, population status and sustainable management of NTFPs in most of the tropical lowland rainforests. We, therefore, assessed the population, distribution and threats to sustainable management of NTFPs within the tropical lowland rainforests of Omo and Shasha Forest Reserves, south western...

The Growth and Yield of Teak [Tectona Grandis Linn F.) Plantations in Northern Ghana

ABSTRACT Teak (Tectona grandis Linn F.) is a popular exotic species in Ghana, widely grown in industrial plantations and small scale community woodlots. In spite of its importance, limited information exists on the growth and yield of this species. Presented here are the results of a preliminary study aimed at assessing the growth and yield potential and developing provisional yield models for the management of teak in Northern Ghana. Data were collected from 100 temporary sample plots from p...

Agroforestry Practices And Their Potential Contributions To Soil Fertility And Food Production In Katsina State, Nigeria

ABSTRACT Unsustainable forest land use practices have resulted in land degradation in the northern part of Nigeria leading to low crop yield. Agroforestry is a viable option for reversing dwindling crop yields through proper soil management practices. There is notably no sufficient published information on the contributions of agroforestry to food production in Katsina State. The practices of agroforestry and its potential to slow down the pace of soil degradation and boost food production in...

Stem Wood Structure Of Four Ghanaian Khaya Species

ABSTRACT Four closely related Ghanaian Khaya woods were studied for differences in anatomical, chemical and physical properties to enable clear identification of the species. The species were Khaya anthotheca (Ka), Khaya ivorensis (Ki), Khaya grandifoliola (Kg) and Khaya senegalensis (Ks). Samples for the study were obtained from identified standing trees from eight Forest Districts in Ghana. Macroscopic, microscopic and ultrastructural features including physical and chemical features were e...
