Identification Of Large Variation In Pfcrt, Pfmdr-1 And Pfubp-1 Markers In Plasmodium Falciparum Isolates From Ethiopia And Tanzania

Abstract Background: Plasmodium falciparum resistance to anti-malarials is a major drawback in effective malaria control and elimination globally. Artemisinin-combination therapy (ACT) is currently the key first-line treatment for uncomplicated falciparum malaria. Plasmodium falciparum genetic signatures at pfmdr-1, pfcrt, and pfubp-1 loci are known to modulate in vivo and in vitro parasite response to ACT. The objective of this study was to assess the distribution of these resistance gene m...

Influence Of Land Cover And Host Species On Trypanosome Infection In Cattle And Its Socio-Economic Impacts To Pastoralists Of The Maasai Steppe, Tanzania

Abstract Introduction: Trypanosome infections result into trypanosomosis in cattle and this is an infection detrimental to pastoralist income. The patterns of transmission are thought to be influenced by ecological factors including wildlife and land cover. We assessed the influence of the relative abundance of wildlife and land cover (cultivation and habitat type) on the presence of trypanosome infections in replicated cattle herds of the Maasai Steppe.

Combatting Desertification and Drought

Drought and desertification are twin global environmental problems. Nigeria is faced with rapid desert encroachment affecting fifteen northern most states from moderate to severe rate. Climatic variability and anthropogenic activities such as deforestation, extensive cultivation, overgrazing, cultivation of marginal land, bush burning, fuel wood extraction, faulty irrigation system and urbanization are major causes of desertification. Drought and desertification impact directly or indirectly ...
