The plant Morinda lucida falls under the family Rubiaceae known to have wide usage in traditional medicine. Morinda lucida is a tropical West African tree of medium-size about 18–25 m tall, the bark is grey to brown in colour, flowers are white in colour, the fruit is a drupe, seed is ellipsoid, yellowish and soft. The purpose of this work is to determine the antimicrobial properties of      Morinda lucida against Mycobacterium species, a very virulent and infectious organism, isolated ...

Elemental Composition, Evaluation of Anti-nutrients, and Antioxidant Potentials of Morinda lucida

Morinda lucida is a tropical West African tree of medium-size, having brown colored bark, white flowers and yellowish ellipsoid seeds. It is widely used in traditional medicine systems of different countries. The preliminary phytochemical screening of different extracts prepared from bark, leaves and seeds of M. lucida revealed the presence of Saponin, Tannins, Alkaloids, Flavonoids, and Cardiac glucosides. Furthermore, it also reveals presence of Minerals like Sodium, Potassium, Calcium, Iro...

Assessment of Antimicrobial, Phytochemical Screening and Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrophotometric Profile of Crude Chrysophyllum Albidum Essential Oil

Abstract The main purpose of this work is to investigate and compare the antimicrobial properties of Chrysophyllum albidum seed and stem bark essential oils, against some selected pathogenic isolates, to compare the phytochemical composition of the oil of Chrysophyllum albidum seeds and stem bark, to analyze the chemical compounds responsible for activities of the essential oil using Gas Chromatography – Mass Spectrometer (GC-MS) method in order to provide scientific validation for their us...

Evaluation of Quantitative Elemental Compositions and Antioxidant Potentials of Spondias Mombin Extracts (Linn), A Precursor Against Infectious Diseases

The purpose of this research work is to investigate the elemental composition and antioxidant potentials of Spondias mombin (leaf, root and stem bark) at concentration of 10, 20 and 5mg/ml. using different conventional laboratory methods, also to determine the antioxidant potentials of Spondias mombin. The element present are Sodium (Na), Calcium (Ca), Magnesium (Mg), Zinc (Zn), Iron (Fe), Lead (Pb), Copper(Cu), Manganese (Mn), Potasium (K) and Phosphorus (P).it was observed that all elements...

Bio-guided Isolation, Purification and Chemical Characterization of Epigallocatechin; Epicatechin, Stigmasterol, Phytosterol

Spondias mombin (Linn.) is a widely cultivated edible plant used in folkloric medicine for the treatment of severe infection and health disorders. This research work was carried out to isolation, purification and chemical characterization the bioactive constituents of the ethyl acetate stem bark fraction of Spondias mombin (Linn.), a medicinally important plant of the Anacardiaceae family. This study revealed the presence of flavonoid and steroids, which have been found to be important hormon...

SORBITOL NEGATIVE ESCHERICHIA COLIIN WATER LEAF (Talinum triangulare)

A total number of 60 samples of water leaf were collected from different areas in Enugu Metropolis, these samples were inoculated and examined to detect the presence of sorbitol negative Escherichia coli 0157:H7. About 35(17.5%) samples out of the 50 samples inoculated were found to be sorbitol negative E-coli. From the result E-coli 0157:H7 is the predominant serotype accounting for 90% of all VTEC isolates. THE PREVALENCE OF STREPTOCOCCUS PNEUMONIA IN PNEUMONIA PATIENTS IN ENUGU METROPOLI A CASE STUDY OF UNTH ENUGU.

ABSTRACT The prevalence of streptococcus pneumonia in pneumonia patients using university of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH) Enugu as a case study was carried out based on the fact of the pneumonia is one of the commonest afflictions of the aged people and children worldwide. A total of 50 samples were collected. 12 (24%) of the sample were from sputum while 38 (76%) were from nasopharyned swabs from children who can not produce sputum using sterilized disposable swab sticks. 12 (24%) of th...

PATTERNS OF TRANSMISSION, PREVALENCE AND INTENSITY OF SOIL TRANSMITTED HELMINTHIASIS IN NSUKKA ZONE, ENUGU STATE, NIGERIA

ABSTRACTThe study assessed the prevalence, intensity and environmental risk factors affecting thetransmission of soil transmitted helminthiasis in eleven randomly selected communities inNsukka and Uzouwani Local Government Areas of Enugu State, Nigeria. It also determinedthe effect of peoples’ knowledge of mode of transmission of the diseases and access tofacilities for water supply and sanitation in each of the communities. This is with a view togaining insight into the patterns of transmi...

Effect of spent Engine oil on the growth of Spinach

ABSTRACT The effect of spent engine oil on soil properties and growth of Spinach (Spinacia olereacea) was investigated. Five treatments (0, 20, 40, 60, 80)ml of the spent oil were applied to soil in perforated poly bags with Spinach strands at four weeks after stabilization. Soil analysis showed that spent engine oil had no effect on both the pH and texture of the soil. Organic C, Na and Mg in the contaminated soil increased compared to control. There was decreased in concentration of P due t...
