INCIDENCE OF HAEMOGLOBINOPATHIES IN EHIME-MBANO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF IMO STATE, NIGERIA.

ABSTRACT. A study of haemoglobinopathies in Ehime-Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State was carried out with mostly students of secondary schools in the area who are true representatives of the population. The result showed that 20% of the people randomly sampled are carriers of the sickle trait (HbAS) while the remaining 80% have genotype of HbAA. The incidence of blood group antigen showed that 29.2% (146), 12.0% (60), 3.0% (15) and 55.8% (279) have antigens A, B, AB and O respectively. Individuals having Rhesus factor antigen were 96.8% (484) of the population, while the remaining 3.2% (16) were negative for Rhesus factor antigen. Age and sex did not affect the pattern of distribution of Hb genotypes, blood group antigens and Rhesus factor in remarkable ways. The very low incidence of sickle heterozygotes is of advantage to the population given that the probability of the heterozygotes coming together to get married is low. This is confirmed by the absence of sickle cell anaemia patients in the study.
