Abstract
Mining is viewed as the backbone of the economies of mineral rich countries and yet the exploitation of iron ore and other precious minerals in the communities of Lunsar and Bumbuna in the Northern region of Sierra Leone has nothing to write home about except severe environmental degradation and poverty. Nonetheless, the extraction of such minerals has greater potentials for economic development, industrial growth, social progress and the prosperity of a nation. Such minerals are essential for basic human needs and economic opulence. In this regard, proper schemes and mechanisms of exploitation, utilization, development and maximum use of minerals should be adopted to benefit the present generation while reserving a portion for the future generations. However, the exploitation of iron ore in Lunsar and Bumbuna has done more harm than good both to the environment and to the local people. This paper examines the realities on the ground pertinent to the environmental and social impacts of iron ore mining activities in the Northern region of Sierra Leone particularly in Lunsar and Bumbuna.
