Passive Design Strategies For Cooling Residential Buildings In Hot Climate (International And Local Case Studies

ABSTRACT

Passive design is designing the building in ways and methods that helps to make this building thermally comfortable with the least use of electric power. passive design includes considering the design of all building's elements " walls ceilings and floors" and that to help reduce thermal gain in the building. The objective of this research is first identify passive design and its objectives and the meaning of thermal comfort which is the main goal to be achieved through passive design. Then review the study of passive design strategies that helps to provide passive cooling. And presents these methods and strategies in a detail. The study adopted the analytical descriptive method in the case study. based on the theoretical information's and the methods and strategies of passive design that have been presented in the research. The study was conducted on two global cases Andrew Severs House and James Cooper Group of Houses. in Australia in areas characterized by warm climate And included some of passive design strategies to provide cooling for the houses. A local case was taken Othman al-Khair's house in Khartoum city, which also included passive cooling strategies. Then a comparison was made between the global cases and the local case to find out what's the difference in passive strategies for cooling that have been used globally and locally and what are the reasons. Then the research reached a number of results and abstracts, the most important is to attention to application of passive design strategies in residential buildings in hot climate and the importance of studying and design all elements according to the environmental data of the region. Also the research presented a number of recommendations to raise awareness about the importance of passive design in Buildings.
