The study involved two hundred stool samples collected from 100 patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and another 100 as controls, during the period between February and June (2016). The results showed that 51 (51%) of irritable bowel syndrome patients as well as 33 (33%) of the control were harboring gastrointestinal parasites. The study revealed that Entamoeba histolytica was seen in 22% of the IBS cases follow...

Coagulation Profile In Normal Full-Term Neonate In The First Week Of Life In Lagos-Nigeria

ABSTRACT Normal reference values of haemostatic profile are frequently needed to assist in diagnosis and management of bleeding disorders. Because of the anatomical and physiological differences between neonates and adults, it is essential to know the reference range of coagulation profile in neonates in the first week of life. The aim of this study is to establish a normal reference range for coagulation profile in normal full-term neonates in the first week of life in Lagos-Nigeria. This i...

Rhesus D Variants Among Pregnant Women In The Greater Accra Region Of Ghana

ABSTRACT Background: The rhesus (Rh) blood group system is one of the most polymorphic and immunogenic blood group systems known in humans. The common potent Rh antigens reside on the RH polypeptides. The antigenic expression is controlled by the RHD and RHCE genes, linked in tandem on chromosome 1. The D antigen is clinically the most important because of its high immunogenicity and polymorphism. HDFN is perpetuated by foeto-maternal rhesus antigens incompatibility. Aim: The aim of this stu...

Detection of Bcr-Abl 1 Fusion Gene in Saliva of Chronic Myeloid Leukemic Patients

ABSTRACT The fusion between the “breakpoint cluster region” gene (BCR) and Abelson gene (ABL1) is the molecular hallmark of most cases of chronic myeloid leukaemia and some cases of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. The objective of this study was to detect BCR-ABL1 in saliva of known CML patients collected in Oragene-RNA kit (DNA Genotek, Canada) and to see if mRNA could be preserved for a longer period in the saliva samples than in blood samples. A comparison of the BCR-ABL ratios in bloo...

Coagulation Profile of Non-Diabetic Hypertensive Patients in Enugu Urban Enugu State

Abstract Fifty (50) Non-diabetic Hypertensive Patients in the medical out-patient (MOP) department of University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Ituku Ozalla, Enugu, Nigeria aged 40-78 years comprising 25 males and 25 females were investigated. Also fifty age and sex-matched apparently healthy subjects served as the control group. The following variables were determined using standard methods: prothrombin Time, Activated partial Thromboplastin Time, Fibrinogen Assay, platelet Count, Fas...

Haplotypes in Exon 4 of Gene as Predictive Markers For Prostrate Cancer

Abstract Prostate cancer is the second highest cause of death due to cancers in men. The risk of developing it increases with age and the highest incidence is observed in men above the age of 50 years. In black men, the estimated lifetime risk of being diagnosed with prostate cancer is 20.6% while the lifetime risk of death due to it is 4.7%. The current standard tests for the diagnosis of prostate cancer are the serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test, digital rectal examination (DRE) and...

ABH-Lectin Activity in Some Tropical Edible Fruits And Seeds Extracts And Its Impact on Health Conditions in Plateau, Jos

ABSTRACT   The ABH-lectin activity was carried out on fourteen (14) tropical edible fruits sourced from Terminus market in Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria. Haemagglutination techniques were carried out on fruit juices and seed/nut extracts using standard A, B, O(H) cells. Three hundred (300) subjects administered with questionnaires were tested for ABH-fruit incompatibility. Cashew; red and yellow (Anacardiumoccidentale), apple; green (Maluspumila) and guava; red (Psidumguajava) juices agglutin...

The Involvement Of Transient Receptor Potential Melastatin (Trpm) Member 6 And 7 Channel Regulatory Proteins And Imbalance Of Calcium And Magnesium Ions In The Aetiology Of Beingn Prostatic H

ABSTRACT Background: Benign prostatic hyperplasia is a well-known and commonly diagnosed urological condition in the aging male population, which affects over 50% of men in their 60s and increased to 90% by the age of 85 years. The condition is normally accompanied by lower urinary tract symptoms that impacts negatively on the quality of life. Upon all the problems that BPH cause in the life of men, the exact aetiology is unknown. Several mechanism have been mentioned that contribute to the p...

Intestinal Carriage Of Extended-Spectrum Betalactamase Producing Enterobacteria In Hiv/Aids Patient

ABSTRACT Background: Routine empiric antibiotic therapy is common in patients living with HIV/AIDS. Such routine antibiotic regimen could lead to selection of multidrug resistance especially ESBLs in hitherto drug sensitive intestinal colonizing flora. There is paucity of data to describe intestinal carriage of ESBL-producing enterobacteria in HIV/AIDS patients. Aim: This study was designed to examine HIV/AIDS patients for faecal carriage with extendedspectrum beta-lactamase producing enterob...

Antimicrobial Resistance And Distribution Of Meca Gene Among Clinical And Carriage Coagulase Negative Staphylococci Isolates

ABSTRACT Background; In most laboratories, Coagulase Negative Staphylococci (CoNS) are treated as contaminants and therefore follow ups with regards to species detection and antimicrobial susceptibilities are not done. There is a growing incidence of antimicrobial resistant CoNS across the globe making infections difficult to treat. Data on these resistant pathogens are limited in Africa in general and Ghana in particular. It is therefore important to characterize CoNS with respect to their a...

BLOOD PERILIPIN A LEVELS IN DIABETIC PATIENTS AT KORLE-BU TEACHING HOSPITAL, GHANA.

ABSTRACT  Perilipins are phosphoproteins that are found in fat cells where they are restricted at the uppermost layer of lipid droplets. Over-expression of perilipin proteins in fat cells cause the storage of triacylglyceride (TAG) to increase in connection with a reduction in fats and lipd breakdown that causes increases in weight and type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. There are two types of perilipin which have a common N-teminal amino acids sequence which are perilipin A (P...

PREVALENCE OF PFHRP2 AND/OR PFHRP3 GENE DELETIONS IN PLASMODIUM FALCIPARUM ISOLATES AND THE PERFORMANCE OF HRP2 BASED MALARIA RAPID DIAGNOSTIC TESTS

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Malaria rapid diagnostic tests (MRDTs) are important for malaria disease management. However, performance of the RDTs is affected when the targeted antigens in the parasite have a variation or are altogether absent. The most common parasite target antigen in RDTs, Plasmodium falciparum histidine-rich protein 2 (HRP2), has been reported to be absent in some P. falciparum parasites. Loss of the pfhrp2 in P. falciparum parasites affects the accuracy of PfHRP2 based RDT ...
