Essential Oils and Fatty Acids Composition of Dry Fruits of Tetrapleura tetraptera

ABSTRACT: The composition of essential oil and fatty acids of dry fruits of Tetrapleura tetraptera were analyzed by GC/MS. Forty-four compounds representing 98.5% of the essential oil were characterized. The essential oil was dominated by acetic acid (34.59%), 2-hydroxy-3- butanone (18.25%), butanoic acid (8.35%), 2-methyl butanoic acid (7.58%), 2-methyl butanol (7.45%), butanol (4.30%), 2-methyl butenoic acid (3.65%) and Nerol (3.25%). The fatty acid was dominated by palmitic acid (49.44%), ...

Determination of the cyanide content in some bitter cassava species in parts of Ohimini L.G.A of Benue State

This project work was carried out to determine the cyanide content in some bitter cassava species in parts of Ohimini L.G.A of Benue State and finding out the best method to considerably reduce the high content in the cassava.

Assessment of Heavy Metals in The Muscle of Domestic Birds

Abstract— The main objective of the present study was to provide the information on the concentration and distribution of manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb), in the muscle of different species of domesticated birds  (guinea fowl, Local fowl, Cockerel) considering both male and female species using  Atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Initially, the samples were digested with concentrated nitric acid, Hydrogen peroxide and Perchloric acid in a T...

AN OVERVIEW OF TUMOUR MARKERS

ABSTRACT Tumor Markers comprise a wide spectrum of biomacromolecules synthesized in excess concentration by a wide variety of neoplastic cells. The markers could be endogenous products of highly active metabolic malignant cells or the products of newly switched on genes, which remained unexpressed in early life or newly acquired antigens at cellular and sub-cellular levels. The appearance of tumor marker and their concentration are related to the genesis and growth of malignant tumors in ...

EVALUATION OF EXCESSIVE LIFETIME CANCER RISK DUE TO NATURAL OCCURRING RADIONUCLIDES AND HEAVY METALS IN LAGOS BEACH SEDIMENT WORK

Abstracts Evaluation of anthropogenically enhanced naturally occurring radionuclides 238U, 232Th and 40K present in Lagos beach sediment (Eleko and Elegushi) were analyzed with gamma ray spectrometer using a highly shielded NaI (TI) detector with the objective of evaluating the environmental radiological hazard. Mineralogical analysis and characterization was also carried out using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique. Heavy metals such as Pb, C...

Determination of levels of lead in paints to which young children and adults are exposed.

The Paint samples were gotten from old houses in areas of Ikorodu, Onipan, Lekki, Berger, Agbado-Ijaye, Lagos Island, Moremi and Makama hall (University of Lagos) and were digested using three different methods, which include 1) Nitric acid and per-chloric acid digestion 2) Nitric acid and hydrogen peroxide digestion 3) Dry ashing digestion using muffle furnace     These methods were compared and was discovered that oil - based paints (gloss paints) has higher concentration of lead tha...

COMPARATIVE DETERMINATION OF CALCIUM AND MAGNESIUM IN FOOD SUBSTANCES USING EDTA-TITRIMETRY AND FLAME ATOMIC ABSORPTION SPECTROMETRY (FAAS)

A comparative study was carried out for the determination of calcium and magnesium in milk and water melon (food sources of calcium and magnesium). Mixed standard solutions of calcium and magnesium (spike) were added to the samples before digesting with a mixture of concentrated nitric acid and concentrated hydrochloric acid (1:3). The calcium and magnesium content of the digest were determined using flame atomic absorption spectrophotometer (FAAS) and EDTA titration. The percentage recovery ...

STUDIES ON CORROSION INHIBITION POTENTIAL OF INDIGO CARMINE ON MILD STEEL IN ACIDIC MEDIUM

ABSTRACT Studies on corrosion inhibition potential of Indigo Carmine extract on mild steel in acidic medium was carried out using weight loss and electrochemical techniques. It was observed that the Indigo Carmine extract retarded the dissolution of mild steel in the acidic medium. The corrosion rate decrease with increase in concentration. The CR decrease from 37.59mm/yr to 27.50mm/yr in presence of the inhibitor. The CR also increase with increase in temperature up to 60oC. The increase in ...

TRANSLOCATION OF HEAVY METALS FROM SOIL TO VEGETABLES (SPINACH AND OKRA) IN IRRIGATED FARMS LAND BY NASARAWA TOTO RIVER BANKS IN NASARAWA STATE.

ABSTRACT This study was conducted to investigate the level of translocation of heavy metals in vegetables(spinach and okra) with soils samples from farmlands irrigated with Nasarawa Toto River Bank water in Nasarawa state Nigeria. Using atomic absorption spectrophotometry(AAS), concentrations of Pb, Cd and Cr are determined in ten different farmlands were vegetables(spinach and okra) with soils were collected. The ranges of average concentrations of metals (mg/kg) of Pb and Cd in spinach were...

DETERMINATION OF SOME SELECTED HEAVY METALS IN TOMATO (FRUITS AND LEAVES) AND ONION BULBS COLLECTED FROM HUNKUYI ROADSIDE FARMS, ZARIA.

ABSTRACT  The concentration of heavy metals such as Pd, Cd, Cu and Cr were studied using AAS on vegetable samples such as Tomato (fruit and leaf) and Onion bulb. Trace element as Cu showed high concentration. The concentration of heavy metal like Cu ranged from of 0.155 to 0.024mg/kg in tomato fruit; 0.120 to 0.057mg/kg in leafy tomato; 0.118 to 0.121mg/kg in onion bulb which were more than the maximum permissible limit according to the International organization like FAO and WHO. The conce...

Acid rain

The major causes of pollutionits effects and solution

ACID RAIN-THE MAJOR CAUSE OF POLLUTION, ITS CAUSES, EFFECTS AND SOLUTION

Abstract Acid rain, more properly termed acid deposition, is the input of acidifying compounds from the atmosphere to the earth's surface. It is comprised primarily of sulfuric and nitric acids that are formed when emissions of sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOX) react in the atmosphere with water, oxygen, and other compounds. Chlorine ...
