Assessment of Newcastle Disease Virus Antibodies Among Poultry Birds (A Case Study of Anyigba Kogi State)

ABSTRACT Newcastle disease (ND) is one of the most important avian viral diseases because of its high economic impact on the poultry industry.  Newcastle disease is now claimed to be responsible for 70-80% of annual death in village chickens. Losses in hundreds of poultry birds of various ages and sexes in Anyigba Kogi State of Nigeria is attributed to the disease. The prevalence is always at its peak during the dry season (Harmattan) of every year in the last decade. The result of this stud...

Production of Amylase from Isolated micrococcus from Fermented Ugba

ABSTRACT Ugba (Ukpaka) is the Ibo name of the fermented African Oilbean seeds (Pentaclethra macrophylla, Benth). It is a popular traditional food condiment in Nigeria especially among Ibo ethnic group generally. It is produced by natural (local) fermentation in homes as a small family business. It is an important and cheap source of protein for people whose staple foods are deficient in proteins. It is also eaten as a delicacy and used as flavouring for soup. This write up aims to describe t...

PRODUCTION AND QUALITY EVALUATION OF BANANA (MUSA SAPIENTUM) WINE

ABSTRACT  Juice was extracted from banana (Musa sapientum) pulp with the addition of lemon juice and was inoculated with Baker’s yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) and held at 30  for seven days. The result of the yeast count increases at 48hr, and at 96hr the yeast count decreased gradually. It ranges from 4.9x107 cfu/ml at 0hr, 5.1x107 at the 48hr and 4.8x107 cfu/ml at 168hr. The pH of the Banana wine produced at the end of fermentation decreased (2.85) while the titrable acidity of ...

MICROBIAL PROFILE OF SUYA MEAT IN ENUGU STATE

ABSTRACT Twenty (20) samples of suya meat in Enugu were collected randomly and analyzed microbiologically and the isolates were identified as Staphylococcus aureu (35%), Escherichia coli (15%), Streptococcus species (15%), Pseudomonas (35%). The most frequently isolated organisms were Staphylococcus and Pseudomonas. The total viable bacterial counts ranged from 1.9x  3.8x  cfu/g whereas, total coliform count ranged from 1.1x -3.0x  cfu/g on Nutrient agar and MacConkey agar  respectively. ...

BACTERIAL CONTAMINANTS ASSOCIATED WITH COMMERCIAL POULTRY FEED FROM THREE DIFFERENT COMPANIES

ABSTRACT The bacterial contaminants associated with commercial poultry feeds from three companies in Nigeria (vital, Guinea and Top) were studied using streak plate techniques.  The culture media used were Nutrient agar and Mac Cokey agar.  The aim/ objective of the study is: To ascertain the microbial safety of commercial poultry feeds produced by companies.  To isolate microorgaisms that are contaminants of poultry feeds, to identify the bacterial types and to determine the microbial lo...

THE EFFECT OF PESTICIDES DICHLORODIPHENYL TRICHLOROEYHANE (D.D.Y) AND BENZENE HEXACHRORIDE (BHC) ON THE MICROFLORA OF THE THREE TYPES OF SOIL.

ABSTRACT The effect of pesticides, chchlorodipheny trichloroethane (DDY) and Benzene hexaxhoride (BHc) on the  microflora of the three types of soil (loamy, clay and sandy soil) was conducted. The serial dietitian technique was employed up to 10-3 using nutrient agar, potato dextrose agar and sabourand agar plates. The isolation of both bacterial and fungal organisms were made  before treating the soil types with the two pesticides), D.D.T and BHC.  and after treating the soil types with ...

THE ANTIBACTERIAL ACTIVITY OF THREE TYPES OF MEDICATED SOAPS ON STARHYROCOCCUS AUREUS FORM WOULD INFECTIONS

ABSTRACT The antibacterial activity of three type of medicate soap on staphylococcus aureus isolated from wound infections was conducted. Fifty individual with would infection within the age range of 9-73 years were sampled. Swabsticks were used to collect specimens from wound infection. each swabstick was streaked separately over plates of nutrient   and  macconkey agar and later incubated at 370c. out of the fifty (50) individuals sampled 25(50%) were mostly infected with staphylococcus ...

PRODUCTION OF EDIBLE VACCINE USING BIOTECHNOLOGY

ABSTRACT Edible vaccines offer exciting possibilities for significantly reducing the burden of diseases like hepatitis and diarrhoea, particularly in developing world where storing and administering vaccines are the major problems. Edible vaccines are prepared by molecular farming using the science of genetic engineering. Selected genes are introduced into the plants. The transgenic plant is then induced to manufacture the encoded protein. Owing to its low cost, it will be suitable for develo...

EFFECTS OF DIFFERENT DRYING AND PRESERVATIVE METHOD ON THE MICROBIAL LOAD, NUTRITIONAL VALUE AND ANTI-OXIDANT ACTIVITIES OF EGUSI AND OGBONO SEED

ABSTRACT Colocynthis citrullus (Egusi) are seeds of a creeping annual and intercropping plant made use in traditional farming practices while Irvingia gabonensis (Ogbono) are seeds of small mango-like fruit found in West Africa. The seeds when ground into paste are highly mucilaginous and are used in thickening soups. They also add to the nutritive value of soups. They also add to the nutritive value of soups. Samples of Colocynthis citrullus (Egusi) and Irvingia gabonensis (Ogbono) were rand...

A review on the side effect of preservatives

ABSTRACT Preservatives in foods are designed to prevent bacteria growth and spoilage, but sometimes they can also prevent you from enjoying good health. While the effects of food preservatives on the body can vary with age and health status, looking into the potential harmful effects of preservatives in foods may help you reclaim good health and protect your personal well-being against toxic damage. Food preservatives are meant to improve food safety and that is why laws authorized their us...

Microbial Fuel Cell

Introduction Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are bioreactors that convert chemical energy stored in the bonds of organic matters into electricity through biocatalysis of microorganisms (Potter, 1911; Cohen, 1931; Davis and Yarbrough, 1962; Moon et al., 2006). The schematic of a typical MFC is shown in Fig. 1. In the sketch below, the anodic and cathodic chamber are separated by a proton exchange membrane (PEM) (Wilkinson, 2000; Gil et al., 2003) that allows transport protons while blocking oxygen...

Health benefits of Ginger

ABSTRACT Ginger is a member of the Zingiberaceae family of plants. It has been a part of healing strategies in Asia, India, Europe, Africa and the Middle East for centuries for treatment of such disorders as arthritis, stomach upset, asthma, diabetes and menstrual irregularities. There is scientific support that ginger may alleviate the symptoms of nausea and vomiting following pregnancy, surgery, cancer therapy, or motion sickness and suggestive evidence that ginger reduces inflammation and ...

Norovirus

NOROVIRUSNorovirus (NoV), causing the winter vomiting disease, is today recognized as the most important agent of acute human gastroenteritisThe etiology of diarrheas can involve several agents, such as viruses, bacteria, and parasites. Bacterial agents are relatively more important in developing countries, whereas viral agents are more relevant in industrialized countries. The importance of these agents is related to hygiene and sanitation conditions for the population1. In 1972, a 27-nm vir...
