ABSTRACT Twenty-six wound healing plants have been identified in the Kpando Traditional Area in Ghana. The methanol extracts of six of these plants showed some level of antimicrobial activity against wound causing infectious microorganisms. Similarly, four of these plants exhibited significant wound healing properties. Free radical scavenging activity by 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl radical (DPPH) indicated a concentration dependent activity with no significant difference from Ascorbic aci...
ABSTRACT The roots of Cryplo/epis sangllino/Cllla have been investigated for their chemical compounds since 1931. But so far, not much has been reported on the stem although they are used in traditional medicine in Ghana. OJ'plo/cpis sallgllino/enla (Lind.) Schlechter (family Periplocaceae) is a medicinal plant used in some African countries against infectious and parasitic diseases. Phytochcmical $creening of the extracts from the stem (bark and wood) of Oyplo/epis sangliino/Cllla revealed t...
ABSTRACT The root bark of the plant Turraea heterophylla belonging to the family Meliaceae was investigated for its chemical constituents. Phytochemical screening of both the methanolic and methylene chloride extracts indicated the presence of tannins, saponnins, terpenes, steroids and about eight different limonoids. Exhaustive extraction, chromatography and spectral analyses led to isolation of three compounds. The spectrometric analyses and the resulting data - including IR, NMR(H-H COSY a...
ABSTRACT The iodine status of staff and pupils of Hillcrest Schools, undergraduates of UCC, 2016/2017 academic year and a household in Agona Swedru were determined using Titration Method, Sandell-Kolthoff Method and a Novel Method. Discriminant analysis results showed that the Novel Method correctly classified 77.4% of the original cases. The novel also had a percentage recovery of125% and a Horwitz Ratio of 0.12. Based on these, ...
i. Abstract Four types of soil are found in Liberia. Latosols of low to medium fertility occur in rolling hill and cover about three-fourths of the total land surface. Shallow, coarse lithosols, in the hilly and rugged terrain, cover about one-eighth of the land. Infertile regosols, or sandy soils, are found along the coastal plains they are deficient in nitrogen and phosphorus, which retard the growth and yield of crops. Therefore,...
Abstract: Aim: isolation, purification and NMR characterization of secondary metabolites in Mimosa pudica. Study design: extraction, isolation and identification of the secondary metabolties from the petroleum ether and metabolites extracts from Mimosa pudica. Methodology: In the course of our study on Mimosa pudica, a compound was isolated and purified using different chromatographic techniques and the structure of the compound determined on the basis of their spectroscopic data (IR, H...
Abstract: The side effects and the increasing microbial resistance to synthetic drugs in the management and treatment of infections remain an issue in modern medicine, hence the increasing research in phytomedicine. Therefore in the present study, the active phytocomponents of Mimosa pudica’s wholesome parts were revealed using quantitative phytochemical analysis. The antibacterial activity of the Ethanolic extract was studied using Well diffusion method. The activity was tested aga...
Water treatment describes those processes used to make water more acceptable for a desired enduse. These can include use as drinking water, industrial processes, medical and many other uses. In Ghana, water is the most common and cheapest drink one can afford. For this reason, drinking water is supposed to be clean and safe enough for human consumption. The goal of all water treatment process is to remove existing contaminants in the water, or reduce the concentration of such contaminants so ...
