Impact of Effluents From the Transcorp Hilton Hotel on The Quality Characteristics of The Receiving Water From Maitama Stream Abuja.

ABSTRACT

The impact of the effluents from the Transcorp Hilton Hotel on the quality of the Maitama Stream, Abuja was studied. Samples were collected from points upstream (control samples), the effiuent discharge point and points downstream (a total of eight points) and analyzed as follows: Electrochemical methods of determination were used in the determination of pH and dissolved oxygen content whilst classical methods of analysis were used in the determination of total alkalinity and chloride concentrations in the water samples. Ammonia, nitrate-nitrogen and phosphate concentrations were determined by UV Nisible absorption spectrophotometric methods. The mean total alkalinity, chloride, dissolved oxygen, chemical oxygen demand, biochemical oxygen demand, ammonia-nitrogen, nitrate-nitrogen and phosphate concentrations in the downstream of the river were 119.5 ± 3.2, 23.5 ± 0.5, 1.9 ± 0.1, 38.4 ± 0.6, 25.1 ± 0.5, 9. 7 ± 0.3, 0.2 ± 0.1 and 1.5 ± 0.1 mgl"1 respectively compared to 56.1 ± 1.6, 4.6 ± 0.1, 2.2 ± 0.4, 21.1 ± 0.5, 5. 7 ± 0.3, 0.3 ± 0.1, 1.5 ± 0.3, 1.5 ± 0.3 and I. 7 ± 0.1 of the upstream. This shows that the eflluents from the hotel have an impact on the quality of the Maitama stream. Inspite of this, the concentrations of most of the parameters measured were lower than the FEPA quality guidelines for water quality in Nigeria, showing that eftluents from the Transcorp Hilton hotel have not impacted so much on the river to pollute it.
