The explosive growth of video data necessitated the need for large amount of storage devices. Nonetheless, the stored multimedia data has a lot of redundant video frames. These redundant frames make video browsing and retrieval difficult for the user as well as time consuming. Thus, negatively affecting bandwidth utilization and storage capacity. In order to improve the bandwidth utilization and storage capacity, keyframe extraction algorithms were proposed. These algorithms were implemented to extract unique set of frames and eliminate redundant ones. However, despite the achieved improvement in the keyframe extraction process, there exists significant number of redundant frames in the summarized video. Therefore, in this paper, we present a simple and reliable approach for the extraction of keyframes based on histogram difference and k-means clustering. The histogram-based approach was utilized to detect shot transitions in the video. Furthermore, the k-means clustering approach was used to efficiently extract unique set of keyframes.
