ABSTRACT The study on "An assessment of the influence of border activities on primary education in Malaba Town Council, Tororo District" was carried out using the following objectives, leading causes of smuggling by pupils in primary schools in Malaba Town Council, the effects of smuggling on the academic performance of pupils in primary schools and the attitude of the stakeholders towards smuggling in Malaba Town Council. The literature was reviewed in order to establish the gaps that exist in as far as the study was concerned. The literature was reviewed following the objectives of the study. The review of the literature was still based on the research questions to be answered. The research design that was used was exploitative and descriptive research designs hence a large area was explored and the outcome described accordingly. The targeted population of the study was generated through simple random sampling techniques. Data was collected using questionnaires, interview, observation and documentary analysis as research instruments. The collected data was collected manually using Ms-Word and Excel computer packages. The background information or biodata contributed much towards the findings as follows; many of the residents of the area were unemployed, the majority of the respondents were teachers who were technical people whose answers should be authentic. Most children in Malaba Town Council are involved in smuggling. The leading causes of smuggling were several but especially children's background, illiteracy, few schools in the area and poverty. Children were involved in smuggling and this affected their performance through absenteeism, money minded, diversion and environmental. Police, civil society and local leaders helped in controlling smuggling. In conclusion smuggling affects academic performance at a very big rate hence to stop smuggling government should mobilize and sensitize people, among others.
