ABSTRACT

The study was an assessment of the roles played by Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in

addressing the plight of people living with HIV I AIDS in Kabale district. It was carried out in

Kabale Municipality in Joint Clinical Research Center as a case study.

The study was set to achieve the following objectives; to assess the roles played by NGOs in

addressing the HIVIAIDS problem, to find out the assistance rendered by NGOs to HIV patients.

The study aimed at establishing the problems that are faced by HIV patients in Kabale district.

Furthemore the study aimed at finding out how NGOs influenced the health seeking behaviors of

the households that are affected by the HIV epidemic.

The study was conducted with the use of several instruments like interviews, questionnaires and

focused group discussions. The study had 50 respondents who were in two categories.49

respondents were clients of JCRC while 10 were officials from JCRC

The study found out that NGOs play a big role in addressing the problem of HIV, and the study

found out that women were the most affected and infected by the HIV epidemic. The study

further found out that the government was too playing a great role in decentralizing service

provision. The government is being complimented by NGOs to offer services to the vulnerable

groups HIV patients inclusive.

The study recommends that though NGOs have done a tremendous work towards the fight of

HIV I AIDS, there is still more to be done to improve the lives of the people living with

HIVIAIDS. Many people at the grassroots level are still dying in large numbers due to the fact

that they cannot access the medical services that they need for their survival. There is more need

for increased community participation because it contributes so much to the success of the planned projects in the community.
