Assessing the Use of ICT Tool (Computer) in the Basic Schools: The Case of Asante Akim North District

ABSTRACT

The use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) tools has become the driving force of development for every facet of the economy with the Educational sector being inclusive. The main aim of this research was to assess the usage of ICT tools (computer) with special focus on Basic Schools in the Asante Akim North District of the Ashanti Region. In order to comply with the objectives, a questionnaire was designed and administered to 200 participants. All of the 200 participants used in the survey were teachers. Presentation and discussion of findings were done by the use of frequency distribution and percentages. The findings revealed that about 80% of the participants indicated that there is less availability of ICT tools(computer) especially in rural areas, which generally makes its usage less effective. The study further revealed that though the majority of the participants are professional teachers, most of them were informally trained. Given the above findings and conclusions, this study recommends that ICT tools (computer) should be widely and effectively used in the teaching and learning in schools. Also, the government and the private sector should support in the provision of ICT tools in basic schools so that teachers and students get to practise with them. Another recommendation is that teachers need to be trained well in the usage of ICT tools (computer) for the benefit of learning and teaching.
