Development pathways available to the so-called periphery countries/societies of modern world are varied and controversial. Development theorists, writers and scholars are wide apart vis-à-vis convergence of consensual paradigm that is germane to pursue the course of holistic development of the periphery in the world political and economic landscape. This article is a dispassionate critique of the strengths and pitfalls deducible from the perspective horizon of the three dominant schools of thoughts in development literature, namely modernization, dependency and World System Analysis (WSA). Modernization theorists proclaim that there is a natural order through which countries ascend to what is seen as higher developmental stages.
The theorists recommend that developing countries follow in the footsteps of developed countries and overcome endogenous barriers to exogenously motivated development through industrialization, liberalization, and opening up the economy. The dependency school seeks to achieve more equal wealth, income, and power distributions through self-reliant and collective action of developing nations. Dependency theories see the cause of underdevelopment primarily in exploitation by the industrialized nations. On their own part, proponents of world system theory point out that there is a global economy which all countries belong, countries are interdependent and development in one country depends on the country’s position in the global economy (world system).
