Challences Faced By Learners With Mental Retardation In Mwingi Zone Central Division Mwingi District

ABSTRACT

The study was geared at to fmd out the challenges faced by learners with mental retardation in Mwingi Zone Mwingi District. The researcher set the objective the study as fmding out the problems faced by this learner inclusive settings, to establish the support services are available for the learner with metal retardation and to fmd out whether there were teachers trained on how to handle the mental retardees in the Mwingi zone mwingi district. The researchers set questionnaires to collect the relevant data. The data was to be analyzed and presented to come out with clear information about the study objectives. This was done by use of tables and a bar graph. It was found that the mentally retardees school goers have been facing many problems like luck of adequate programs in the school and the communi1y, This was so because these learners where assumed to adapt the curriculum and the teaching scyles being used in regular schools. Another problem was luck of specialist in medical areas and special needs educations administrators. It is shown from the study that 90 percent of the challenges suggested by the researcher where true. The researcher recommended that leaner with special needs in education should be placed in regular schools and units in order to make learning environment as natural as possible. These learners should be given extra attention on academic areas they face problems. The learners need to be assisted to learn and develop daily living skills. Negative attitudes and rejections towards these children should be avoided. Families of such siblings should accept them fully and the govemment should take full cost of providing education to the retardees hence avoid and forget about cost sharing plan.
